The Flint River Council's annual "Friends of Scouting" contributions campaign
enables the council to provide an outstanding program to over 9,000 youth and
adults in eight counties of middle Georgia. Through the Scouting programs - our
children, families, and communites are stronger and better prepared for the future.

Why is it so Important to Contribute?
Scouting families play a vital role in the annual Friends of Scouting campaign
because they see, on an ongoing basis, how important the Scouting program is in
the lives of their Scouts. The focus of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare youth
to face challenges and excel. To meet that goal, the Scouting program uses a
comprehensive, values based program infused with a mixture of fun, outdoor
adventure and traditional values. The Boy Scouts of America prepares youth to be
the leaders of tomorrow.

Dear Parents,

As you have experienced, Scouting is a wonderful opportunity for your youth to grow
and learn.  They learned values that will assist them in developing into mature young
adults.  Throughout the Scouting year, your child has had an opportunity to partake
in many activities with our own unit whether it is camping, hiking, shooting sports,
canoeing or attending a council sponsored event such as Spook-o-ree or Climbing
and Rappelling days as well as summer camp.

We are very fortunate to have places like Gerald I. Lawhorn Scouting Base for our
Scouts and families to enjoy year round, but it takes more than participating in
activities and popcorn sales to keep the Gerald I. Lawhorn Scouting Base
properties operating for our Scouts to enjoy.  The Gerald I. Lawhorn Scouting Base
is in operation for 50 weeks each year, which is much higher than most other
council camping facilities.  Over 40% of the total operation costs are for camp
alone, but as your leader, I feel the facilities and opportunities we have are worth
the investment.  The “Friends of Scouting” or FOS campaign is one way that you
can support Scouting on a local level.  We are currently in the middle of our
campaign, and we need your help.

This year our unit held an FOS presentation at one of our meetings.  In this
presentation, we saw a video, where we learned about all the opportunities
available to both our Scouts and our families, and we also discovered that it costs
approximately $250 per youth per year to participate in the Scouting programs.
That is above and beyond the registration fee that goes directly to the National
BSA.  Now, it is our turn to give back.  We are asking all families who have not
made a contribution, to make a commitment now.  The levels of sponsorship are
listed on the attached card.  Your contribution will provide programming, contribute
towards our specific assistance fund, and continue the operation of our properties.
We are asking all families to make a pledge to the campaign by June 10, 2008.
You can make payments throughout the rest of the year.  As a unit, I am confident
that we can do our part to help the campaign reach its goals.

You can either send your contribution with the attached card directly to the Flint
River Council at P.O. Box 173, Griffin, GA 30224; or send your contribution directly
to me, and I will get it to the council.  Thank you for your consideration and support
of the Friends of Scouting Campaign.  Any help you can give is very much
appreciated.

Greetings, from your new CubMaster.

I want to begin with a special thanks to
our previous CubMaster, Ed Brabant. I
have enjoyed working with Ed and wish
the entire Brabant family the best in their
upcoming move.

This is probably an appropriate time to tell
you a little of my background. I was not
involved in Boy Scouts as a child. Instead,
I did Royal Ambassadors, which is a
Scout-like program in Baptist churches. In
college, I served for 2 summers as a
camp counselor at the Royal Ambassador
camp in Forsyth, Georgia. As a counselor,
I saw the importance of outdoor skills in
giving boys a purpose and self-
confidence that they could use throughout
their lives.

In Cub Scouts, I have served as Assistant
Den Leader and Assistant CubMaster. I’m
really looking forward to this upcoming
year as CubMaster.

As CubMaster, my goals for the upcoming
year are:
  • That all of our adult leaders
receive training in the area that
    they are serving in.
  • That we continue a tradition of
    excellent programs throughout the
    year.
  • That the boys continue to learn
how to be good Cub Scouts.

Now, as you are planning your summer
vacation time. I would encourage each
den / family to consider attending some of
the activities at Camp Thunder. Camp
Thunder is a wonderful facility and their
programs are well run. We will post some
of the events our website, but check the
Flint River Council website (www.
flintrivercouncil.org) for a complete listing
of their activities over the summer.

I look forward to serving with each of you.
Yours in Scouting,
Cub Master:
Tony Lewis

4th of July Float - WORK DAY - 2pm at Chris Connick’s house:
179 Rockspray Ridge
Tiger Day at Camp Thunder
Saturday, July 12, 2008

I know that some of you are new to daycamp and others have done it before.
  1. Remember the 2 deep rule. Although it may be totally innocent, it is better to
spray on bug spray and sunscreen than to rub it on a child that is not your own.
  2. Also, there are women at camp and sending boys into the girls room is not a
good idea. There are dads at camp too and they are good about making sure
the boys go in the boys bathroom, use it, wash their hands and get out.
  3. The lines are long and we have to keep them moving. Therefore there is not time
    to play around.
  4. You may want to bring along some hand sanitizer.
  5. Every den needs to bring at least one wagon for their den. The wagons hold
coolers with ice and the boys' water bottles.
  6. Bring some plastic shopping bags to keep their hats, sunscreen, and things they
    make in.
  7. Take a few trash bags and ask the boys to pick up trash we see as they move
    from station to station.

Here are a few reminders about things you need to bring to camp. And things you
should not bring.
  1. Wear old clothes and shoes and your "Daycamp" t-shirt everyday.
  2. Bring (2) empty 2 liter soda bottles on the first day of camp.
  3. Bring  a bottle of water everyday. Example: Kroger bottle of water.  Please write
your sons name  with a permanent marker on the bottle and his initials on the top
of the lid before you chill it. This way the name stays on.
  4. Bring a sack lunch and a drink that will not spoil. We do not have access to a
refrigerator, microwave, eating utensils, or cups at the church. If you use a lunch
box please write your sons name on it.
  5. If you would like for your son to wear sunscreen and bug repellent please apply it
in the morning before you get to camp. You can send extra with your son to be
applied later. He will need to be able to put it on himself or send a spray type if
    he needs adult help.
  6. Medicine-If you son requires meds during the day please take them to the First
Aid station. Do not send the meds by your son.
  7. Bring a hat. This is optional...some boys like them, others don't.
  8. Boys are not allowed in the girls bathrooms. Therefore, remind your son to give it
a try when bathroom breaks are available. Tell your son not to try to wait until
lunch time as the lines are long.

DO NOT BRING:
  1. Money- there is no need for any and it will probably get lost.
  2. Pocketknife- The boys are not allowed to bring a pocketknife to daycamp even if
    he has his whittling chip.
  3. Daycamp starts at 8:20am. Try to be there by 8am.
  4. Please ask your son to bring an open mind, big smile, lots of enthusiasm, and
tons and tons of patience. They will have to wait their turn but they will have the
same amount of time as the boys before him. This is especially needed at BB's
    and Archery.

We are looking forward to seeing you all at daycamp.
